Since I bought the Anniversary Ed. stick on E-Bay last year (because I came to terms with how ghetto ps2 controller 3S is), I've been reading about a ton of different sticks that people use on tournaments from the SRK forums, and I've seen some great customs that people do (mostly in the UK).

What is your favourite brand/style and why?  I've only really played on 2 different sticks while playing 3s-  One being the Anni Stick and the other, 2P Japanese cabinet- huge difference there in the mechanics.  If I could combine a Japanese stick with the Anniversary button layout, that would be my ideal setup.

That being said.. You hear a lot about Hori sticks and certain types of buttons, but what makes them saught after, and what makes them different or better than the Anniversary Ed. stick?

the main differences are the buttons and sticks. i played in american and japanese buttons and sticks. And i recommend you to try them both before modding your stick. they're very very different, while american parts are more stiff and rough and japanese parts are more soft and sentitive. i personally found the japanese parts more suitable for a nice 3s experience, but i met people who hates japanese parts and prefer american.
Here's a few useful links.
www.happcontrols.com <-- For American parts
www.akihabarashop.com <-- For Japanese Parts
www.arcadestickmonk.com/SFACmod.html <-- great guide for modding an AC stick

hope it helps you.

For American sticks, I'd recommend a MAS which you can get at massystems.com

Thanks for the link to the Street Fighter Anniversary stick (SFAC) Mod, that was really helpful in understanding the advantages of certain kinds of sticks and buttons.

I was getting the feeling from other forums that the stock SFAC Stick was widely regarded as a bad stick, but I didn't understand why;  It definitely helped me understand, and I really notice some of them now, especially the low-profile buttons on Japanese cabinets vs. the SFAC.  The part about the joystick being shitty because of the sensors = bad diagonals was interesting but I don't really notice it when I play.

If anyone has anything technical to add, I'd love to hear more about what kind of mods can be made to make stock sticks better.

Ummm, this might be a project I'll undertake when I get back to school in Sept.  I have some buddies who do cabinet making and woodwork, I'll see what we can come up with together.

The thing is... when you look at a box of a gutted stock SFAC, it's really simple... it's a box with holes drilled with a certain bit.  You could make one from scratch easy if you have the parts.

I saw a guy on the SRK forum make one from scratch with an old chessboard and I liked that, maybe I'd go for something like that.

Don't hold your breath though Wink

Hey arlieth wrote an article on how to mod your sfac on hardcore gamer magazine...the materials he used to mod the stick is the exact same stuff used at the ffa cabinets

As for favorite stix to use on console...uh...I dont really care too much about stix...I can use any stick as long as it works well...I think last year's evo, I used hori stix (hori knock off american tekken 5 ones and bad ass hrap versions) I think I used gootecks & mutant xp's mas stick too and uh...someone's home brew stick (it might have been mike z's stick?)

For some reason I love the buttons on the old green stick for the DC...anyone remember that one?...people at evo call it the green goblin stick...I love those buttons!

Bottom line, just play whatever u like...if u like american, japanese, korean style set up, then thats cool too

p.s - no pad  Grin

Is it possible to get like a faq on the different sticks / buttons and how they differ from each other??

Like between MAS, Hori, Happ, Seimitsu, sanwa etc.

I had a discussion with a guy like ages ago, but it good to get a second opinion about things and cross check data. Detail would be great in regards to effects on games and gameplay feel.

thanks

MAS uses Happ, so cross that out..

Hori parts are ok, but when you compare them to Sanwa/Seimitsu parts, you'll notice how bad they are.

Happ parts are what you find on American cabs. They're rough and can take more punishment than Japanese style parts. Their sticks have very large deadspaces and the spring range from hard to soft. They only use bat-top sticks with circular restrictors. The buttons have more resistance when compared to Japanese style parts.

Sanwa sticks are what you'd typically find in Japanese cabs. They have smaller deadspace when compared to Happ parts. Sanwas use square restrictors, but they can be swapped out for octagonal restrictors (circular too if the stick is JLW series). The buttons are slightly bigger than Happ buttons and have no resistance. It takes very little effort to activate the buttons.

Seimitsu sticks are typically what you'd find in Japanese shmup cabs. They have a smaller deadspace when compared to Sanwas, so they make great sticks for fighting games too. Seimitsu buttons are the same size as Sanwas, but offer a little bit more resistance. They feel closer to Happ buttons.

Hori Real Arcade Pros are what most people look for. They come pre-equipped with a Sanwa JLF stick (the kind you'd find in most Japanese cabs) and Hori buttons. The buttons aren't that great, so people swap them out almost immediately with either Sanwa or Seimitsu buttons. Most people want the HRAP because it has a nice weight to it, uses quick disconnects for the buttons (makes it easier to swap out the buttons), and requires no modding to use arcade quality parts.

I got really comfortable playing with the stock Anniversary editon, but when I go to play actual competition on 2P cabinets, the restrictors on the japanese sticks makes it look like I've never played in my life.  I need to get a stick that mimics this 2P cab as close as I possibly can, and practice on it.

I'll use your recommendations, thanks very much

Those sticks are very similar. The only differences are that the Tekken 5 stick doesn't have turbo switches and doesn't have a Sanwa JLF stick. It uses all Hori parts.

As for your buttons, they're not flat. They're slightly convex.

If you want to mod your stick with all Sanwa/Seimitsu parts, you're going to need to do a bit more work than with an HRAP.

Here's a link explaining how to do the mod.
