Okay so I skipped a day or seven, my bad. Anyways, back to business. This is a pretty good match from a few years back. Grand finals of the second Gamers Vision ranbat featuring Aruka and Pierre. Perhaps the most important lesson from this video is to not underestimate the power of Ibuki.
Most people, myself included, have never really played a great Ibuki player, and it's a shame because it allows a significantly lower tier character to basically dominate a higher tier character. Pierre, throughout the match, seems generally lost when it comes to figuring out what to do to counteract Aruka's Ibuki. Of course, Urien only needs a few hits to balance out about 10 of Ibuki's because she takes damage like a bitch. Unfortunately it's not enough.
In the first round, Aruka spends most of the match sticking out very
safe pokes and basically whittling away Pierre's lifebar. At 0:37, he
walks up to Pierre and sticks out two standing jabs. Lots of Ibuki's
do this to make you flinch, so DON'T FLINCH! Pierre tries to stick out
a low forward and gets a launcher to the face.
Notice at 0:42, he does a f+MK I believe, which is a quick overhead.
Pierre blocks and tries to counter with standing jab, but it's actually
parry bait! I'm not sure how it is with other characters, but when
playing Ibuki, you really have to know which of her moves have frame
advantage because if she baits you, she can easily hit you with a quick
20% combo that bumps up your stun meter.
At 0:49, Aruka lands a low forward and then starts to back off
because he feels like he has a big enough life lead to finish off the
round with safe pokes. Pierre throws out random pokes for another 7
seconds and then Aruka loses his patience and jumps in with a dagger
and catches a fireball and a tackle. Pierre makes a mistake and puts
the Aegis reflector on top of him instead of doing fireball XX Aegis
and making him block and then going for a mixup. Aruka quick rises and
throws Pierre into the corner and gets sucked into the Aegis. Aruka
keeps his cool and blocks all of Pierre's pokes, then runs away and
does a full screen super. Pierre actually stays on the ground and
walks back a step and then super jumps, but Ibuki's SA1's range is too
far. That was a surprise to me for sure.
In that situation, it might have been better to keep the pressure on
and then go for an EX tackle. You could say that that's scrubby, but
knowing what we do now about Ibuki's SA1 going across the length of the
screen and that even super jumping won't get you out of it, it's better
to die trying than to sit there and get killed by a single dagger from
that distance.
At 1:29, Pierre throws a fireball XX Aegis and Aruka tries to
counter by throwing the daggers. Pierre counters with jumping strong
and gets rid of the daggers. Here is a situation that either confuses
a lot of top players or they just can't resist trying to get out of
it. Urien's jumping strong resets Ibuki and she falls into the Aegis.
Most players do as Aruka did and try to parry out of it, however,
unless your name starts with a 'D' and ends with 'aigo', you should
probabl let this one go. By trying to parry, Aruka opens himself up to
getting hit by three or more jumping fierces which is major damage,
especially when he's only got about 30% life left. Even though he
parries most of the hits, had Pierre not missed the final jumping
fierce at the end, Aruka would have been dead or down to a single
pixel. Had he not tried to parry after being reset, he would have
eaten a single jumping fierce and then would have landed and had the
tail end of the Aegis on top of him. I guess if he thought he wouldn't
be able to block the Aegis mixup, then it was the right thing to do,
but in my experience, trying to parry out of the Aegis and jumping
fierces in that situation is just asking for trouble. Also taking into
account the extra meter Urien gets by landing two or three jumping
fierces, it's just better to take the reset and the damage and land.
